BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Choose the questions relevant to your concern and bring them to your consultation.
Open the consultation checklistWhat are you hoping to change?
Point out the feature you want assessed and describe whether it changes with lighting or expression. Avoid assuming that every dark area is caused by fat or that every hollow requires the same treatment. Ask what the clinician can establish in an examination.
| Your description | A useful question |
|---|---|
| Bags or fullness | Which structures contribute to this appearance? |
| A hollow or visible transition | What part of this concern would the proposed operation change? |
| Loose-looking skin | Will the plan treat skin, and where would an incision be? |
| Darkness | What is the likely explanation, and what will surgery not change? |
How do the procedure names overlap?
ASPS describes lower-eyelid procedures that may remove or reposition fat. An incision inside the lower eyelid is one approach and does not remove skin through that incision. ASPS · Eyelid surgery procedure
"Lower blepharoplasty" and "fat repositioning" therefore should not be compared as if they always describe two mutually exclusive operations.
What if another procedure is suggested?
Ask why an additional cheek, midface or skin treatment is proposed and what happens if it is not included. Request the separate risks and follow-up needs.
What should you ask about risks?
Eyelid surgery can involve dry eyes, difficulty closing the eyes, bleeding, infection, scarring and changes in vision. The risks depend on the procedure and the person. ASPS · Eyelid surgery risks
Ask the surgeon to explain which risks apply to the proposed plan, what alternatives exist, and how follow-up is arranged.
What should you bring to the consultation?
Bring a clear description of what bothers you, when it began, and what you hope will change. If you have had previous surgery, request the operative report and share it through the clinic's secure channel. Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, eye symptoms and other treatments.
If you are traveling, confirm who will explain consent and aftercare in a language you understand, where follow-up will happen, and what happens if you need care after returning home. NHS · Cosmetic surgery abroad
Questions & answers
Will surgery remove every dark circle?
Not necessarily. Ask what is causing the discoloration and which parts a proposed treatment may leave unchanged.
Is fat repositioning always a separate operation?
No. It can be part of a lower-eyelid surgical plan. Ask for the actual steps, incision and skin treatment.
