BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Choose the questions relevant to your concern and bring them to your consultation.
Open the consultation checklistWhat does the term describe?
People use this expression for different concerns: a visible band above the lash line, a crease that seems high, or a fuller appearance after surgery. The word alone does not tell a clinician what caused it. Use neutral descriptions and explain what has changed.
A target crease height copied from someone else is not a treatment plan. Ask how the visible crease, remaining skin and eyelid opening will be assessed together.
Does lowering the crease solve the concern?
This cannot be decided from the label. Ask the surgeon to explain which part of your concern a proposed change would affect, what previous surgical changes matter, and what trade-offs remain. Ask whether any tissue removal is proposed and why.
- Is the concern mainly crease height, fullness or eyelid opening?
- What evidence from the examination supports the plan?
- What cannot be changed safely?
- What are the alternatives to another operation?
How should you evaluate a preview?
A manual crease demonstration during consultation can help discuss a preferred shape. It is not a prediction of the healed result. An edited photo or simulation should not be presented as a guarantee.
NHS eyelid-surgery guidance states that results cannot be guaranteed. This applies to how a preview is described, not only to the operation itself. NHS · Eyelid surgery
What should you ask about risks?
Eyelid surgery can involve dry eyes, difficulty closing the eyes, bleeding, infection, scarring and changes in vision. The risks depend on the procedure and the person. ASPS · Eyelid surgery risks
Ask the surgeon to explain which risks apply to the proposed plan, what alternatives exist, and how follow-up is arranged.
Questions & answers
Is a thick crease always caused by too much fat?
No cause can be established from that description alone. A clinician needs to assess the previous procedure and current anatomy.
Can a surgeon promise an exact crease height?
Ask what can be planned and what remains variable during healing. A demonstration or measurement is not a guarantee of the final appearance.
