Aftercare support and a clinical handover are not the same thing
Some clinics publish support for overseas patients. JK describes coordinator help through aftercare and follow-up on its international page. DA lists postoperative interpretation on its international service page. BRAUN says follow-up timing may be arranged around departure on its homepage FAQ. BECOME lists direct English contact routes on its homepage. Request a patient-specific record of the procedure, warning signs and clinical responsibility after departure.
Ask which contact is administrative and which route reaches a clinician who can review symptoms or records.
Ask for instructions that work outside the clinic
Verbal advice can be hard to recall after a procedure or translate for a doctor at home. Request written instructions in a language you understand, with generic medicine names where possible, dates and contact roles. The NHS guidance on surgery abroad advises travelers to discuss aftercare and complications. The ASPS eyelid safety page lists dry eyes, closure difficulty, scarring and vision changes among possible risks. The clinic should explain which symptoms require routine contact, prompt local assessment or emergency care for your case.
Confirm how quickly routine messages are reviewed and what to do when care cannot wait for a reply.
Assemble a handover packet before departure
Keep a digital copy and a version you can access offline.
Suggested handover contents
- Procedure date and exact procedure performed
- Anesthesia and relevant test summary
- Medicine list, dose and duration
- Wound, dressing, eye-drop or activity instructions
- Expected review dates and purpose
- Warning signs and the action for each
- Daytime and after-hours clinic contacts
- Records or images a local clinician may need
- Remote-review process and privacy method
Record who supplied each document. If a planned procedure changed, make sure the final handover reflects what actually occurred, not the earlier quote.
Add the clinic's address and legal name so a local provider can identify the treating institution.
Plan for care that cannot wait for an overseas reply
Time zones, messaging delays and language handoffs can make remote advice slower than local assessment. Ask the clinic what situations should bypass chat and go directly to emergency or eye care. Identify a local clinician before travel if you have ongoing eye symptoms, relevant conditions or a complex revision history, but do not assume that clinician has accepted postoperative care until confirmed. Ask how the Korean clinic will share records with permission. Also clarify which remote reviews are included and what requires a paid in-person visit. Share the agreed follow-up plan with any local clinician who has accepted your care.
Test that links, phone numbers and file passwords work before leaving. Store key instructions with a trusted contact if you consent.
Frequently asked questions
Is messaging the clinic enough after I return home?
No. Ask when to use messaging, when to seek local assessment and when emergency care takes priority.
What records should I take home?
Request the final procedure record, medicines, care instructions, review plan, warning signs and relevant test or image records.
Can a local doctor provide follow-up automatically?
No. Confirm willingness, records needed and how the Korean clinic will communicate with permission.
Sources and comparison method
Clinic information is attributed to each provider. NHS and ASPS sources explain general care and risks. They do not describe Korean legal requirements or clinic-specific outcomes.
